Video Review:    The Very Hungry Caterpillar

With this gem of a video for preschoolers, Disney did justice to the outstanding children's books by Eric Carle that have been enjoyed by parents and kids alike for years. The 30-minute video showcases 5 of Carle's picture books, including, of course, the classic book the video takes its title from.

The fantastic eye-catching collages are all here, plus narration, animation, and music--the latter being particularly appropriate for the final story, I See a Song. In fact, the musical interpretations of the stories are simply perfect. This video comes complete with gentle and effective lessons about the days of the week, counting, and early science. But it does even better when it tugs at children's imagination and delivers subtle messages about the beauty of the world.

Pros:
  • Very pleasing to the senses.
  • A gentle and soothing experience--perfect for winding down time.
  • Video is based on real books so that parents and children can compare and contrast--and enjoy--them through both mediums.

Cons:
  • Children who demand lots of excitement from their videos may lose interest.
