The Barbie Diaries

The new Barbie Diaries DVD is engaging, but families should be aware that it's too mature for the doll's target audience. The problem is, little Barbie fans are likely to want the latest Barbie video offering. It's well-done, the CGI animation is intriguing, and the songs are snappy, but its focus is on dating and other high school-age issues. For older audiences, there are positive themes revolving around the value of friendship, determination, and self-confidence. Barbie's diary and charm bracelet are magical -- what Barbie writes in her diary seem to come true, offering her the confidence to go after her dreams. Essentially, the story promotes the power of positive thinking.
