Top Pick. An A+  program that is perfectly suited for preschoolers stars a big ball of blue clay with eyes named Ollo. Ollo in the Sunny Valley Fair (see our full review) takes kids on a story adventure of problem-solving fun. An adorable cast of characters is featured, and educational hotspots make learning easy. This is fabulous, A+ software. Rating: A+

Our Buyer's Guides help make buying choices easy for consumers. We test hundreds of children's products and strive to keep up to date on the latest releases. Of course, every family is unique. We can't please everyone. However, we are able to select some special titles that are at the top of our "edutainment" list—those that have that extra edge in the categories of design, entertainment, education, and play value.

Besides the letter grades we give most products, reviews on this site often come with a rating bar chart—a visual breakdown of how the product rates in a number of categories. If you'd like to know more about how software products are rated, click here.

As we test new software and products, we will update these buyer's guides to reflect current availability and up-to-date recommendations. These guides are intended to help parents make sense of the overwhelming choices available to them.

Dora the Explorer: Fairytale Adventure (see our full review) takes kids on a problem-solving adventure with a preschool favorite, Dora the Explorer. There have been a few computer games starring Dora released over the past few years, and this is the best of the bunch. The games are clever. Although we have seen some of the featured activities before, this program breathes new life into tried-and-true preschool games, and offers innovative new ones. Three difficulty levels help extend the life of the program. Rating: A

Alphabet Express Preschool (see our full review) is a wonderful program that helps children cozy up to the unique shapes of each letter of the alphabet. This is an older title that still retains its merit today. In fact, there are few alphabet titles available that we now recommend. Children "paint" pictures, watch short animations, play dot-to-dot activities, and more with this excellent title that features both uppercase and lowercase letters. Simple, straightforward activities are featured, all of which incorporate the letters of the alphabet and are children's favorites, such as mazes and find-the-letter activities. Children identify illustrations of objects that start with a particular letter.  Rating: A
